ABOUT

Whirlpool was our 3rd year project, in which we made a dungeon crawling experience filled with engaging mechanics, deep story and, a stylish cartoon aesthetic. Our group (Boba Tea Studios) was composed of: 2 programmers & 3 artists (including me).

Taking the lead role in the art department, especially when it came to environment & level design, was challenging but exciting. I was also narrative writer and project managed. As well as taking on other miscellaneous tasks such as:

  • VFX

  • Video Editing (the trailer above)

  • Recording Footage (setting up dolly cameras)

  • Conducting Testing Sessions

Some of our work can be found on the project twitter page - @boba_studios

STORY SUMMARY

In the world of Apalis, there exist living beings "blessed" with the power of elemental manipulation. These "blessed" are known as 'elementals' and can wield one of the 5 eastern philosophy elements (fire, earth, water, metal, and wood).

Alexander Ess, our protagonist and a water elemental, goes on a quest to save his twin brother, Oliver, from the mysterious steampunk kidnappers.

This is a coming of age story, with an element of wonder and adventure as you traverse through the distinct countries, each inspired and with their own history.

LEVEL DESIGN

The process of designing segments for procedural generation

When it came to designing the level, I had to take into consideration that a major portion of the area will include an element of procedural generation.

The vegetation was to be procedurally generated, but more importantly the level was too, to an extent.

I had to ensure I included a variation of segments that could fit seamlessly with one another.
